Predictions for 2008

6 January, 2008 (12:00) | general | By: B10m

Privacy (by Dave Pearson)

In December, you’ll get bombarded by people looking back on the year. The best website of the year, the top 10 best songs etc. etc. In January, these people suddenly look forward and make predictions of what will happen in the new year.

Let’s look forward! (So that in December we can look back and see where I was right…)

Some predictions for 2008:

  • privacy issues will become a monthly event
  • everything (mail, websites …) will get a “social” aspect
  • some big company burns it’s hands in China
  • swal.org will finally release something “cool”
  • openid will get accepted in more places
  • google will keep gmail in beta

privacy issues will become a monthly event

After the recent Facebook beacon fiasco and google reader debacle, I believe we’ll see these issues more and more. Who’s next? Yahoo? Ebay? Microsoft?

everything (mail, websites …) will get a “social” aspect

This is a cheap one, for clues have already be found to make gmail more social, but of course this applies not only to google. Everything, for some reason, has to be shared with “friends” and we’ll see more and more facebook like apps. This will of course fuel my first prediction.

some big company burns it’s hands in China

Yahoo!, Google both went in and got burned. Who’ll be the next one to burn it’s hands on China? Especially with the Olympics coming up, I believe a lot of companies will go in and try to make a buck…

swal.org will finally release something “cool”

You probably never heard about swal. Keep it that way. When something cool is finally released, you’ll surely read it here. As of yet, there are plenty ideas, but very little code ;-)

openid will get accepted in more places

I like the idea of OpenID and really think this year will be the one where more and more websites will use it. This, of course, due to the fact that everything has to be “more social”.

google will keep gmail in beta

Will it ever get out of beta?

So there you have it. My predictions for 2008. What did I miss? Do you (dis)agree? What are your predictions?
